Artist Statement
Throughout history, humans have created masks as tools for transformation. In ancient performance traditions, masks helped actors access emotions and inhabit other selves. Funeral masks, endowed with divine features, were believed to guide the deceased into the afterlife. Across civilizations, masks have carried spiritual, social, and symbolic meaning—shifting form and function as cultures evolved.
In contemporary society, the idea of the mask has expanded. As social life grows increasingly complex, people construct and perform “social faces” shaped by cultural expectations and behavioral norms. These modern faces function as masks: visual identities that smooth communication, prevent conflict, and even act as a kind of emotional armor. Stereotyped, emoji-like expressions have become a shared language, enhancing efficiency while reducing ambiguity.
For Hanae Sasaoka, these social faces are “sociale expressie, armor, pantser, and glijmiddel”—expression, armor, shield, and lubricant. They allow individuals to present a perfected version of themselves, one that minimizes unnecessary emotional leakage and controls the flow of mood, gesture, and context. She imagines a future in which universal masking could create a kind of Shangri‑la: a world of harmonious surfaces, free of friction, much like the atmosphere depicted in her artworks.
Her Birdman series draws inspiration from the animistic spirit of Chōjūgiga(鳥獣戯画)—the 12th‑century Japanese scrolls often described as the earliest form of manga. In these works, she creates collages of bird and animal masks that flatten the face into a manga-like plane, emphasizing its expressionless neutrality. In contrast, the bodies are rendered with lively movement, heightening the tension between the static mask and the animated human form. Through this juxtaposition, Sasaoka explores the fragile boundary between identity, performance, and the desire to become someone—or something—other than oneself.
